Grid Software

The Grid is managed using customised Scali management software, running on Scientific Linux from one of the head nodes. Windows operations are managed from Windows 2003 Server Compute Cluster Edition (grid management utilities), which runs on the second head node. IPMI and power functions are handled from the Linux system.

Each node has a local copy of two operating system images (one Linux, one Windows). These images are maintained and updated centrally from the head node. Software that is to be loaded onto the Grid is first installed on one of the nodes, including patching and updating Windows and any other software that also exists on the node. When one node is completely configured with the required software, an imaging process is used to capture an image from that node. All nodes on the Grid can then be re-imaged with the newly prepared image, and are then ready for use.
