The Centre for Internet Technologies (CIT) is a research group of the Department of Computing, Engineering & Technology. We are based at the University of Sunderland's award-winning St. Peter's riverside campus, which boasts one of the most modern and best equipped computing environments in the United Kingdom.

Supported by university and external research funding, we conduct research and development work into a wide range of internet technologies. We have extensive links with the Business Gateway and the Business School.

In January 2005, the Centre for Electronic Commerce became the Centre for Internet Technologies, increasing participation in the teaching activities of the Department of Computing, Engineering & Technology. With a proven track record of applied research in electronic commerce, we have established strong links with partners from industry, commerce and the public sector.

We are currently a partner in 3 R&D projects (C4D, IRIOS-2 and RMAS), and since our establishment in January 2005 we have worked with 30 partners on a total of 11 research & development projects.

In addition to our project work, we are also involved in the delivery of a range of internet technologies related modules across the degree programmes of the Department of Computing, Engineering & Technology. Our research activities are currently focussed on ontology based knowledge management systems, semantic web technologies, and ecommerce transaction handling systems. We are also active in network systems research, including GRID computing and distributed systems.

We are actively involved in standardisation at a European level, through the work of the CEN/ISSS workshop: eBusiness Board for European Standardisation.

We work with a number of leading edge technologies such as XML, Adobe ColdFusion and Java, and large-scale database management systems such as Oracle and SQL Server.
